Today, it is common to measure a child solely by his or her success in school. This can cause significant stress to parents whose children are struggling to cope with the demands of our education system. Mission NOVA is a learning support programme for discouraged and under-achieving children. The nova is a kind of exploding star and in Latin it means 'New'. 'NOVA' is also our acronym for 'Nurturing One's Valuable Attributes'.

Can anything else cause more instant heartache for a parent than a discouraged child who has given up on learning?

Very often children from mainstream school with difficulties in learning or other challenges (emotional, social and behavioral) are viewed as lazy, not motivated, very reserved or withdrawn.

These children may not respond well to programs designed for the average student. They usually required individualized programs tailored to meet their needs.

NOVA Learning Support Services were formed in 2006 to address the needs of these children.

Our Approach

Children from mainstream primary school facing learning difficulties as well as social, emotional and behavioral challenges are supported through NOVA Learning Support Services.

We believe that every child has his own unique learning experience. By providing the right environment, freedoms and learning opportunities tailored to his learning abilities, he will be able to learn and develop independently.

A child's learning cannot be decoupled from his affective needs. When children feel good about themselves as learners, they are more willing to take risks and willing to tackle tasks if they believe they can be successful.

Our approach is to tailor the learning programme according to each child's learning needs through IEPs (Individual Education Plans) to meet his long and short term goals. Circle time and personal encounter time are incorporated into the programme curriculum to enhance the child's learning experiences.

The children are facilitated through activities that are tailored to their level of competencies. Through appropriate learning activities, the child's learning is scaffolded and moving towards a journey of independent learning.

We viewed parents as partners in facilitating a child's learning journey. Through regular parent sessions and ad-hoc dialogues, we collaborate with parents through joint reviews of the child's learning goals as well as empowering them with skills to provide home support to their children.
