Igniting Positive Changes

Feeling frustrated and stress at home because your child is not responding to your instructions and displaying negative behaviours?

Morning Star's Common Sense Parenting helps parents to proactively improve their family relationships and their effectiveness as parents. The programme is an interactive, skill-based approach to parenting that teaches parents practical and effective ways to increase their children's positive behaviours, decrease their negative behaviours. Parenting today is far more difficult than it was. Many well-intentioned parents are using outdated and ineffective parenting styles. As a result, they experience daily frustration and stress in their home. Discover from our Common Sense Parenting workshop a practical approach to manage your child's behaviours that doesn't damage the parent-child relationship. In addition, explore how your child learns best and create a conducive home environment in our Parents as Learning Coaches Workshops.

What some parents say who attended our February run of Common Sense Parenting Workshop:

"I've learned to get my son to follow instruction using effective praise and consequences. This was more difficult for me to do so in the past. The teaching of self-control was very useful for both parent and child. It is a very good programme that I'll share and recommend to my friends when I see the need for them to have the skills."
~ Wei May ~

"This programme has a lot of practical skills which are applicable to my child teaching and education. It also helps to provide guidelines/reminder (to avoid) instead of impulsive reaction to difficult situations. I believe it will improve my relationship with my children."
~ Richard ~

Parents from our February run of Learning as Parents Coaches:

"This is the best workshop I've ever attended! Thank you!"
~ Josephine Tay ~

"Excellent course - highly recommended for any parents. Thank you for the service to our community."
~ Alan Yeo ~

Volunteering Opportunities
Morning Star is currently recruiting volunteers for iLearn service starting on 25 April 2009. There is an induction programme on Tuesday, 07 April 2009 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at our Hougang Centre. In the session, presentation to an understanding of the organization and the iLearn service will be introduced.

Brief Background of iLearn Service
The service is aimed at responding to the learning needs of primary school children from lower-income families. As many parents in this group lack the resources to give the necessary foundation to their child, their children may struggle and find difficulties coping in school. With prolonged lack of success in their studies, these children eventually suffer from a low self-esteem. They may begin to see themselves as not just failing in their studies but as failures as persons and failure in life.

Overview of Services
Weekly Saturday facilitated iLearn for children in primary school The iLearn service will be offered every Saturday from 9.00am to 12.00pm. Through our trained learning facilitators and volunteers the children will acquire appropriate learning strategies and build on their strengths to be independent learners.

At the end of each session, our family life educators will facilitate parent-child connection and sharing. This will allow children to share what they have learned and what they found helpful. This will allow parents to affirm their children and practice their parenting skills. The positive parent-child experiences will then strengthen parent-child bonding.

This service is offered free of charge to the families.

Volunteer Commitment
Volunteers who can commit to be present every Saturday (from 8.30am to 12.30pm) for a minimum period of 6 months is preferred. Those who can only commit to a certain Saturday each month, (e.g. every 1st Sat of the month) can also apply.
